Hawk Delivers Ring to Surprise Groom

S&G are rock stars. Literally. They both met while playing music together as teenagers. Their first date was at a concert and they are still literal rock stars. I love how the bride brought out her rock star leather jacket for part of the photo shoot.

She knew that the groom loves Hawks so she wanted to surprise him during the wedding ceremony with a hawk to deliver the rings. Not to mention the awesome photo opportunity. She knew their guests would love to capture photos with the hawk after the ceremony. But first she needed to find a service who would provide a hawk. As hard as she looked, she just couldn’t find a service that provided this. That’s until she spoke to her Dynamic Weddings Planner. We promptly set her up with a falconer (Falconry service) who trains and handles falcons and other birds of prey. We were able to source a beautiful Harris’ Hawk. The groom was surprised and ecstatic to receive the rings via a Hawk. It made for amazing photos.

Jewish Wedding Tradition: To finish the ceremony off in style, we incorporated a Jewish tradition under the Chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy symbolizing home) where the bride and groom broke the glass by stomping on it. This is a Jewish wedding tradition where the breaking of the glass symbolizes the commitment of marriage.

The Vision: S&G have a lot of experience as they are often touring the world performing on stage rockin’ the tunes so they know a thing or two about showmanship. Dennis (that’s me) was their officiant so we added customized vows. Since they are rock stars, the brides vows were only song titles and/or lyrics. OMG, we were all in stitches laughing. Great job. I was able to share a bit about their love for music, movies and of course, each other. They had several goals:

  • Keep it simple. They knew that the venues decor spoke for itself and they were stunning as they were so aside from the Chuppah, some simple flowers and a few other items, they were good to go.

  • Add a few wow moments to make it memorable. The brides surprise with the Hawk achieved this. They also enjoyed an opportunity for photos with the Hawk.

  • The focus was love and just having a good time. They didn’t need to fuss so much with many extras as they were happy to celebrate with everyone there.

  • Keep the budget within check. Yes, weddings can get expensive. They did a great job keeping it simple and within budget. We offered lots of great idea on how to do that and spend where it counted the most.

  • Honour the culture. As one family has a Jewish heritage, we incorporated the fun and symbolic glass breaking ceremony. It’s traditionally done under a Chuppah so we arranged to bring one in as well.

  • Acknowledge loved ones who have left us. In order to remember and celebrate those who are no longer with them, we created a memorial table with photos of those loved ones.

The Execution: They booked our basic Planning & Coordination package. With their clear vision, the focus was creating a clear and accurate colour coordinated itinerary so all the vendors and VIP’s knew what to expect and how to execute. This was incredibly helpful. We had 3 meetings and by the 6 week mark before the wedding, planning was finished. Yes, good, early and directed planning can make your experience so much easier.

The Day: As the focus was to enjoy family and friends, the bride and groom first look photos and portrait session were done before. Their photographer Hannah Cummins is one who we like a lot and she captured some amazing shots around UBC and the Cecil Green Park House, Vancouver grounds.
